What to look for in a video production company

Having been in the video production business since 1998, you can bet we’ve encountered our fair share of clients who’ve had a heap of questions for us to answer. When video production isn’t your area of expertise and with more companies popping up since the explosion of online video, it’s hard to know exactly what to look for in a quality video production company.

We’re proud to say that our team has a combined video production experience that spans around 40 plus years and that’s not something many businesses can say. It’s an exciting time to be involved in the video production industry and we’re incredibly passionate about what we do.

So, if you’ve just started to look into how video can benefit your business and need a helping hand, we’ve put together a checklist of points and questions to cover when searching for the perfect company for you. And don’t worry, this applies whether you’re based in Melbourne or elsewhere.

1 – How long have you been in business?

This one speaks for itself – the longer a company has been in business, the more chance they’ve been successful in providing their clients with great service consistently. You could even speak with their past clients about their experience.

2 – Do you have a portfolio I can look at?

You need to ensure you and the video production company are the right fit. Having a good sized portfolio to look at will help you to make an informed decision, not one based on other factors such as location (just because they’re based in Melbourne or nearby) and so on.

3 – What is your process?

Creating a successful video isn’t a fluke – the best video production companies have a series of processes in place. If a company can’t provide you with a specific answer to this query, run as fast as you can. Being made aware of the process will also outline what input is expected from you and your team as the client.

4 – What is your timeline for my video?

It’s a simple question but it will really help both sides work towards the same goal. A good quality video takes around 4 to 6 weeks to complete. If you need your video sooner, you need to make this clear to the video production company before entering into any sort of Agreement. That way, they’ll be able to advise if it’s possible on their end so that you won’t be left disappointed.

5 – How will you ensure you understand my business?

In order for any video production team to create an effective video – from scripting to the final edit – they really need to understand your business. Here at Creswick Creative, we engage in a thorough briefing process before any work begins and involve clients every step of the way. That’s how we make sure we understand what’s trying to be achieved and confirm our clients are satisfied with our progress.

6 – Who owns the final video?

This may sound like a strange one but really, once final payment is made, you should have full ownership of your video. Just like any other Contract or Agreement entered into, it’s crucial you understand what you’re signing and any limitations that may be at play.

The above questions may sound simple and more like common sense than anything else, but you’d be surprised at how time-poor business owners and employees, skip over these details. At the end of the day, you want to feel as though you can trust your video production company to steer the process in the right direction and produce a quality video.
